HOLIDAYS IN POLAND

Project

Welcome to the Eco-tourism in Poland website. We invite you to familiarise yourself with our unique, one-of-a-kind, and remarkable offer of active holidays.

The Eco-tourism in Poland trips presented here were created by the Civil Affairs Institute - independent foundation with its headquarters in Łódź (central Poland). We offer three meticulously prepared and designed trips into different parts of Poland: Two hiking tours in the Beskidy mountains and one canoeing trip with hiking in northeastern Poland (the so-called "Green Lungs" of Poland). Our aim is to compose a programme that will present three different regions of Poland. The northeast of the country is a crossroads of cultures, distinguished by a harmonious landscape and unpolluted and well-preserved nature. Beskid Żywiecki is the highest part of the Beskidy mountains, second after the Tatra mountains. The area offers vivid elements of mountain culture and the mountaineering way of life. Beskid Sądecki is a picturesque mountain range covered with Carpathian forests and has traces of two cultures: Polish mountain dwellers and the Lemko's (Łemkowie) ethnic group. In order to fully experience the specific characteristics of these regions we offer leisure activities that include long wanderings, sleeping in traditional mountain hostels and in regional agro-touristic houses or typical riverside hostels. The programme has been designed in such a way as to make it adventurous. We don't make any rigid schedules or fixed arrangements; instead we believe that an authentic adventure is what makes it unique.

Places we go to

Beskidy Northeastern Poland The Suwałki area (Suwalszczyzna) is famous for its diverse and harmonious landscapes. We offer a trip to a borderland of Poland, Russia, Lithuania and Belarus, a historic region on the crossroads of various cultures. Our route goes through hills of so called Mazury Garbate and Romnicka Forest - the former border of Eastern Prussia, which belonged to Germany before World War II. Afterwards we continue to the most attractive landscapes of the Suwałki Lakeland (Pojezierze Suwalskie)- a diverse landscape with countless hills, steep slopes and lakes hidden among them. For Poles, this area is a kind of borderlands, an area in the northeastern part of Poland (present Lithuania and Belarus) that was once a part of Poland. Nowhere in Poland will you find such attractive landscapes. Next, we go canoeing on the Czarna Hańcza river, which flows through the impressive pine and spruce forests of Augustów Forest in the southern part of the region.

Beskid Zywiecki Beskid Żywiecki - this mountain range is situated in the southern part of the country near the Slovak border. In the west it connects with Beskid Śląski, in the east and south it borders with Beskid Makowski and Podhale. The highest mountain in the Beskid Żywiecki is Babia Góra at 1,725 meters above sea level. This area is unique, unchanged by human activity, with many natural mountain beech and spruce forests and water in streams is so clean that you can drink it without boiling. Many wild animals live there, including red deer, lynx, and even wolves. Visibility on sunny days in very good, from the highest parts you can get a glimpse of the clouds beneath the peaks. We will also see many monumental wooden buildings and several outdoor museums presenting not only traditional architecture but also folk culture of this region.
The route leads through highly interesting landscapes and valuable natural areas. You may wonder whether such a special area will be crowded with tourists. The answer is no and you can often wander all day long and meet only a few other hikers.
Beskid Żywiecki is protected at the highest level of nature protection, proving its environmental siginificance. The area around Babia Góra is a National Park, the adjacent areas are Landscape Parks with 10 forest reserves. In 1976, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) made this region part of a biosphere reserve.

Beskid Sadecki Pieniny and Beskid Sądecki - Pieniny as well as Beskid Sądecki are a perfect place for mountain and nature lovers. It is hard to say which mountain range is more attractive, wild and beautiful. Fortunately they are in direct vicinity, thanks to that one can hike along those vast areas using just one way of transportation- your own foot. You will be wandering through markedly valuable and protected areas of Pieniński National Park and Popradzki Landscape Park.
Pieniny are small but increasingly enchanting mountain range that stretches on Poland and Slovakia. Dunajec river divides this region into three parts. Mostly attractive here is white water rafting on Dunajec across picturesque forests of Pieniny. A castle in Czorsztyn and Niedzica, Szczawnica spa venue, Krościenko village, Homole ravine and The Red Monastery on the Slovak part are only a few of the attractions in the neighbourhood. The nature only intensifies its beauty- vast meadows, forests, rocks covered with moss. To protect this region a National Park was founded on 23 May 1932, which together with Slovak Nature Reserve was the first international Nature Park in Europe.
Beskid Sądecki range lies between Dunajec river and valleys of Kamienica, Mochnaczka and Tylicka Pass. Poprad Valley is mostly worth mentioning for its attractiveness, it forms astonishing shapes between Piwniczna and Muszyna. Beskid Sądecki has quite impressive amount of spas and mineral waters springs, to mention: Krynica, Muszyna, Piwniczna, Szczawnica. They are a natural resources and gave a basis for establishing recognised health resorts. In 1987 Beskid Sądecki has been given a Popradzki Landscape Park status.
Apart from rich natural resources Pieniny are interesting when it comes to its cultural heritage. Almost everywhere you can see signs of turbulent times - old Orthodox Churches, chapels, remains of Lemko's villages, mediaeval castles and monuments commemorating World War II - these are only a few of regional remarkable points. The present of Pieniny and Sądecczyzna is equally fascinating. It is a hub of folk art. - there are many festivals, a festivity of Blossoming Apple-tree is here celebrated. It is a place where one can unwind and enjoy unique views, tasting ecological products form organic farms, quench your thirst with mineral water form local springs.

[Click here to see trip detailed programme...]

[Click here to see trip detailed programme...]
