ECO-TOURSIM

What is Ecotourism?

According to Elizabeth Boo from the World Wide Fund for Nature, Ecotourism is "a journey to nature, which contributes to its protection".

Ecotourism is an environmentally friendly way of travelling. It takes place, in general, in ecologically and naturally valuable regions. By raising direct financial contributions ecotourism plays an important role in the environmental and cultural protection of these regions. People with ecological awareness and the appreciation for nature choose this kind of tourism.

The definition above can explain some aspects of ecotourism. But is it enough?
We think it's not. Ecotourism comprises tourism as well as ecology, terms used by individuals in different ways, therefore ecotourism means something slightly different for each person.

For us it's something far broader. Wandering and exploring is an indispensable part of our lives, just as eating and sleeping. Close contact with nature is exceptionally important and precious, just like discovering traces of the past or familiarising ourselves with aspects of modern culture. Ecotourism is composed of all these features, but still there's something more.

Ecotourism is the way we, and the people with whom we travel, get around.

The world looks different through an airplane's window or a windshield than when we experience it by walking, cycling or canoeing. Only then we can say that we explore and discover the world. We "breath in the world" and perceive it entirely.

There is a difference between anonymous lump travelling and wandering around with a group of friends. We feel that we are a part of a group with its rights and responsibilities, when we have tasks to fulfil, and we feel needed.

Ecotourism is for us not just travelling, it is discovering nature, history, and culture. It means to get to know other people and ourselves. Ecotourism is a way of living.

Active holidays

Our offer is geared towards active individuals. If you prefer to travel by plane or car, and like to observe everything from the window of an air-conditioned interior, you won't have much fun with us.
On our tours, you will get to know the world with all your senses: not only will you see it, but also hear and feel it. You will spend your time in unspoiled nature, breathing clean air. You will travel by a canoe or on foot with your backpack. It will definitely be strenuous, but perhaps thanks to that you will feel relaxed...

Attractions

Because we want our trips to be unusual we plan several attractions and surprises. Our aim is for our offer to stand out and to give you the chance to experience and explore something unique.
Here are some of the attractions:

  • Close and direct contact with nature
  • Listen to the silence and sounds of nature
  • Admire the sunrise in the best theatre of the world (on the highest peak of the Beskidy Mountains)
  • Accommodation in a thousand-star hotel (sleeping under a star-filled sky)
  • Making a campfire and cooking on a fire
  • Eating healthy, ecological food from organic farms
  • Sightseeing in marvellous places, museums, and outdoor museums
  • Meeting interesting people

Where do we sleep

Standard accommodation is in mountain hostels or agro-touristic guesthouses. Mountain hostels are the main type of accommodation in which we sleep during our trips through the Beskid Żywiecki and Beskid Sądecki mountains. We have chosen traditional Polish Carpathian hostels with the special atmosphere of mountain cottages. These differ from the atmosphere that prevails in overcrowded hotels. Places we have chosen are significant for the providing a feeling of community for all the guests.
There are certain rules to obey: for instance you cannot enter a common sleeping room in dirty shoes. Sometimes there will be no double rooms; more often there will be larger common rooms. Bathrooms and toilets are down the hall and are open for all guests of the hostel. There is also a meeting room that serves as a dining room as well. Here you can prepare your own food or order a delicious meal from hostel's canteen.
Some hostels have fireplace rooms where all tourists can meet in the evenings to share their impressions, sing traditional hiking songs accompanied by a guitar, or just have a beer...
On our canoeing trips, accommodation will be in riverside hostels - here we will sleep at campsites. Conditions are comparable with those in mountain hostels: there will be common toilets and dining rooms, and canteens where we can buy food products. In addition, we plan to stay overnight in agro-touristic guesthouses. Here you can sleep in rooms with a bathroom. The dining room is shared with the hosts, who prepare our meals for us. Some guesthouses offer home-grown vegetables and home-made products (dairy products, cakes, vegetables, fruits).
For those who want to sleep in more "exotic" conditions (for instance on hay), we are able to provide extraordinary accommodation closer to nature, on the condition that the group agrees.

What and where do we eat?

We prefer simple but delicious food. Breakfasts and dinners are prepared at our place of accommodation.
During the day, we will eat snacks en route and prepare a hot meal on the fire.
There will be some cuisine attractions, since we will taste regional food or dine in agro-touristic guesthouses, or in traditional Polish inns, such as the famous "Rome" Inn in Sucha Beskidzka, or the inn in Beskid Żywiecki.
Additionally, there will be some cuisine surprises along the way - tasting of delicacies made of forest fruit from nearby gardens or orchards.

Indispensable equipment

Make sure to bring proper outdoor equipment with you in to order guarantee comfort during long walks irrespective of weather conditions. Comfortable and strong shoes are vital. They should be durable and protect you from pain, and they should cover your ankle. We strongly recommend that your shoes be made especially for trekking in the mountains. Remember to take one pair of shoes to change into; you will wear them at the accommodation.

Moreover, during canoeing you may need to wear sandals. It is recommended to take waterproof plastic bags to protect your belongings from water.
A waterproof jacket, a cap, and clothing protecting from cold are also required. You will also need a sleeping bag, a torch/flashlight, cutlery, and a cup. If you are a bird-lover you may want to bring binoculars. Worth taking with you are as well: insect repellent (cream, spray, gel).
